HTC EVO rundown: week 1

July 6th, 2010

The comparisons i’m making to the EVO are with my previous device, an iPhone 3GS.

Likes
Foremost is the ability to install applications outside of the “app store.” I could have jailbroke my iPhone but why should I have had to?
The ability, using ES File Explorer to browse network shares and pull files, music and pictures to the phone over the network is something that I truly love.

GPS seems to be more accurate. RunKeeper tracks my activity better. Using RunKeeper with the Iphone I frequently had to edit my walks as it tracked several miles over what i normally do. I don’t know if this is due to the way the iPhone did GPS or how the RunKeeper program operated on the iPhone.

The interface is more friendly. The ability to use different scenes can be useful. I can set up one for business use, MileBug, TimeDroid to track my Freshbooks activity, mail and SplashID for passwords. Then I can switch scenes for a more social networking motif.

Mobile Hotspot. It’s something better than tethering. I had tethering with my Treo’s, I could have had it with the iPhone but it wasn’t available without jailbreak. Frequently in my work I need an internet connection to test firewall and VPN settings. I don’t mind paying extra for the service on Sprint even though it’s silly to charge more. I wouldn’t have minded paying for it on AT&T but it wasn’t available.

Video conferencing can be done via Qik or Fring and Skype. the other party doesn’t not need an iPhone to do it. And you can do it over 3G, but the experience is much better over WiFi and will probably be real good over 4G WiMax.

Dislikes
The biggest problem is the Battery usage. The battery usage is horrendous if you leave everything on. GPS sucks power as does leaving both 3g and WiFi on at the same time. Playing some games drains it really fast. Though this same issues occurred with my Treo’s and iPhone. the more media and gaming i did on them the quicker the battery drained.
Currently after a day of checking email every 15min and receiving schedule updates the battery life lasts till quitting time. usually about 30% left.

Controlling playback from headphones. I would like this functionality back. not sure if it can be done but it would be nice.

Overall this is a better device than my old iPhone 3GS. But it should be. As to whether it holds up to the iPhone 4 or Android devices to come remains to be seen.
I’m happy about my switch to Sprint and looking forward to even better tech coming from the device makers.
Hopefully in the near future we can go to the European model of cell phone service and ditch this Exclusivity crap that is crippling consumers.
It would be nice to change devices as better features are released and stay with whatever plan/provider works best for me.
